Historic Live Oaks
City Park is home to the largest collection of mature live oaks in the world, some several hundred years old.
The Park's most historic oaks along Bayou Metairie have survived but with wind damage. We are in the midst of a massive tree planting project to replace the more than 1000 trees killed or severely damaged by Katrina.
Couturie Forest Arboretum
A popular spot for birders, the Couturie Forest arboretum trail is a 33-acre preserve of one of the largest stands of mature mixed hardwoods in a relatively natural condition in the Park.
The Arboretum sustained major damage to its trees from the wind and floods associated with Katrina. The primitive trail is open and replanting has begun.
New Orleans Museum of Art & Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden
The New Orleans Museum of Art, the city's oldest fine arts institution, has a magnificent permanent collection of more than 40,000 objects, valued in excess of $200 million, which is noted for its extraordinary strengths in French and American art, photography, glass, African and Japanese works.
New Orleans Museum of Art
Opened in 2003, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden features over 50 world-renowned works of sculpture in a beautifully landscaped area featuring mature live oak trees.
Art & Architecture
Much of City Park's architectural identity dates from the WPA era when many of the Park's current infrastructure was constructed. The Peristyle, Popp Bandstand, The Casino Building and Popp Fountain were constructed between 1907 and 1917.
The structures and sculptures are intact with varying levels of damage.
