Botanical Garden
Join us for a fabulous garden experience in the New Orleans Botanical Garden! Growing Gardeners is our NEW program for children ages six to nine who want to have some fun in our garden, and learn about- and play with plants, food, and ecosystems! Classes are offered two Saturdays a month from 10:00 a.m. till noon
There's so much to do in the Botanical Garden, and we would love to help your child do it all.
January: Warming Up in the Winter
  • January 14: Make signs for next season's garden, make citrus tea with our own oranges, read about winter and plants in other cultures, discover why leafy greens like cold weather.
  • January 28: Make gumbo des herbes, build an indoor growing system, sow seeds for next season
February: Let's Be Mad Garden Scientists!
  • February 4: Look at slides under microscopes, read stories about the most important discoveries with plants, set up our own science experiments to finish next time
  • February 25: Find out what happened with our experiments, discover the different parts of plants,see (for real!) how plants soak up water, explore how we take care of the plants in cold weather
March: Trees, Trees, Trees
  • March 10: Go on a tree scavenger hunt, play "Tree Factory", observe tree ecosystems, make paper from recycled paper
  • March 31: Examine food trees, make incense or potpourri with cinnamon, bay, and others, make file' from sassafras, examine Spanish moss and resurrection fern
April: Gardens Across Cultures
  • April 21: Meditate in the Japanese Garden, read the story of Echo and Narcissus, explore the Formal Garden, examine Rooftop Gardens, make Medieval air-fresheners
  • April 28: Do Yoga under a tree, visit the Train Garden, examine and make up stories about our statues, discover what plants are (or could be!) symbols for

Sometimes we inherit plant problems when we buy a house or just simply didn't know when and how to prune some of the shrubs that are just out of control, acting like its Mardi Gras all year round! We are going to talk about "rule of thumb" techniques in renovating multi-stemmed plants and hedges. Comfortable shoes and out door attire is needed for this class. (Disclaimer: When the job is too big always call a certified Arborist or certified Landscape Contractor. Some pruning jobs can be very dangerous and could cause permanent damage to you, your house or woody plant)
Susan Capley is the Education Director at the New Orleans Botanical Garden. She has been in the horticulture field for twenty five years and has worked in organic vegetable production, residential landscaping to Grounds Manager (Horticulturist) at the University of Kentucky Arboretum. Susan has a BS degree in Plant and Soil Science from the University of Kentucky.

Marc will discuss collecting and storing seed and some methods of propagating native wildflowers and grasses of Louisiana. He will touch on the requirements of specific species and will focus on those species that are hardest to grow. Feel free to bring questions about plants you may be interested in growing in your garden.
Marc Pastorek has been a landscape designer, contractor and manager since 1985. He and his wife Candi are owners of Pastorek Habitats, LLC, a meadow consulting and restoration firm located in Covington, Louisiana. Since 1993, Marc has had a strong interest in the dynamics of prairies and savannas of Louisiana and Mississippi logging many hours in the field with Dr. Charles Allen and Dr. Malcolm Vidrine, founders of the Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society. He collects and processes native seed from his farm in Pearl River County, Mississippi and from other prairies and savannas in the two-state region including the Cajun Priairie Society's restoration site in Eunice, Louisiana, proudly referred to as "the best restored prairie in the United States". He is past-president of the Mississippi Native Plant Society and the Cajun Prairie Society and is an adjunct teacher at the School of Landscape Architecture, LSU.

Botanical Garden
Come to the New Orleans Botanical Garden to learn how to mount Bromeliads! This is a hands-on workshop led by Art Boe, a bromeliad expert. Art's specialty is epiphytically grown Bromeliads and his mounting techniques have been copied by many. All materials are included in the price and there will be a bromeliad sale after the workshop. Class limit is 25 participants.
Included in the price: One plant per person (nerogelias, aechema, or vrisia), Cypress pre-cut, Instructional handout, Mounting wire, Sack per plant, Tillansia usneoides (Spanish Moss), Plyers (for use only), Hook for back of mounting.
Art Boe has been a Bromeliad consultant with 45 years of experience growing bromeliads, landscaping with bromeliads and mounting bromeliads. Art worked closely with Mrs. William B. Wisdom, heiress to the Coca Cola Empire, for 10 years managing her vast collection consisting of bromeliads, palms, and cycads. Art has traveled the world buying only the finest plant material, he has imported and exported bromeliads and has access to over 3,000 bromeliads. Art owned and operated a Bromeliad boutique in the French Quarters for several, and the Palms Nursery on the west bank. Bromeliads run deep in his bloodline as he is the son of the only wholesale bromeliad seller in Louisiana. As a landscape designer Art is quite sought after he designed the landscaping for the Treasure Chest Casino.

Saturday, April 21th, 9:00a.m.-12:00p.m. In this three hour hands on workshop, you will learn bonsai basics and you will create your very own bonsai tree. If you have ever wanted to learn the art of bonsai and how these living works of art are created, then this workshop is for you! Bring your own bonsai pot if you wish as special bonsai soil will be provided. What to bring: sharp pair of scissors, garden gloves, and apron and bonsai pot (optional). Soil, wire, and a "Green Mound" Juniper will be provided. Class limited to 15 participants.
Jim Osborne is a native to New Orleans and an "Award Winning Bonsai Artist" winning the 2008 Vaughn Banting award. He has served as a Board of Director for the past seven years and is past Vice-President and past President of the Bonsai Society. He has displayed his personal bonsai collection in the fall and spring New Orleans Botanical Garden Flower Show for many years. Jim has also displayed his bonsai at Art in Bloom in the New Orleans Museum of Art.
