What's happening at City Park
August 2010

Friend of City Park:

Big Lake welcomes pedal boats, bikes and the gondola.  Mark your calendar for Martini Madness and Ghost in the Oaks.  It's all happenin' at City Park.

Concessions will be open for purchases.  Early admission ($20 per person) is from 6-7pm.  General admission ($16 per adult, $12 per child over 3yrs)  is from 7- 10pm.  Costumes encouraged!  For information or to join Friends of City Park, call 504.483.9376 or visit friendsofcitypark.com.

They're Baaack!
Several hundred Lutheran (Missouri Synod) youth returned to City Park to volunteer, just as these hard-working kids did last summer .  They did some serious landscaping at Popp Fountain, helped organize and repot at Pelican Greenhouse, mulched a trail on Scout Island and killed invasive Chinese Tallow trees in Couturie Forest. Hundreds more Mormon youth volunteers also helped transform the park.  City Park looks much for all their hard work.  Thank you!

Tennis, anyone?
Construction has begun on the new tennis complex, near Marconi.  The area will feature 26 new courts...16 hard and 10 clay one of which will be a center court, ala Wimbledon .  A new tennis club house will be a perfect place to rent for small cocktail parties, or even a wedding reception.  Now that's a real love match.

New Administration Building
Sheetrock mud is a good thing.  It might not be that much fun to hang and float sheetrock, but it's a sure sign that construction in nearing completion at the Administration Building.  Staff members look forward to moving out of the post-Katrina trailers later in the fall.

Big Lake Improvements
Things are going swimmingly at Big Lake, where regulars have noticed a lot of workmen in the area.  Some major new landscaping is in the works.  The irrigation workers are nearly completed with their work; new plants and shrubs should be going in soon.  Come rent a pedal boat or Pelican boat soon, or take a lazy ride on a gondola through the park's lagoons.  Make reservations for a gondola ride by calling Roberto, the gondolier, at 504.450-4400.

Donations
The state has slashed our budget and made things ever tighter at the park.  Okay, we're strapped. We need your donations of funds or time.  Please donate online or contact John Hopper at jhopper@nocp.org.
