What's happening at City Park
April  2008

Friend of City Park:

Spring has sprung and the park is in full bloom. The Spring Garden Show blossoms April 5 and 6.  Come take a class in the Botanical Garden, hear great music, get your golf swing ready, or enjoy the rides in the Amusement Park.

Spring Garden Show

Stock up on hard-to-find plants and supplies, get help with your weed or plant problems at the Plant Health Clinic, get answers from experts, or just view the colorful gifts of nature at the Spring Garden Show, April 5 and 6, in the Botanical Garden.  For more information, contact the LSU AgCenter at (504)838-1170 or kblackburn@agcenter.lsu.edu.

Thursdays at Twilight

Mark your calendars as Twilight in the Garden continueswith the beautiful music of Betsy McGovern (April 3), Tony Green (April 10), Paul Soniat (April 17), Lynn Drury (April 24), and Patrice Fisher and Special Friends (May 1).  Sit back, sip on the ever popular Mint Juleps and enjoy some of New Orleans' finest talent.   Sponsored by the Azby Fund with support from Republic National Distributing Company, New Orleans Musica da Camera, WWNO 89.9 FM, and the New Orleans Botanical Garden.  For more information, call (504)483-9386 or email garden@nocp.org.

Garden Education

Birdwatching, bonsai, orchids, and staghorn ferns are among the topics to be discussed by local experts at the Botanical Garden's Educational Series.  Classes are limited, so sign up now.  Call (504)483-9473 or email scapley@nocp.org.

Symphony Swing in the Oaks

Pack your picnic, a big blanket, comfy chairs and join the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra at the free Swing in the Oaks at dusk on April 23 in Dreyfous Meadow (near the Museum of Art).  Hear the beautiful sounds of our beloved symphony as they play 'Around the World'.  For more information, visit http://www.lpomusic.com.

Sundays in the Park

The Latin sounds of Julio & Cesar and Vivaz will brighten the Botanical Garden's outdoor stage at Sunday in the Park, April 13, 3-8 p.m.  Bring your tango shoes, your salsa spirit and have a fiesta!

Fore!

The renovation of the Park's North Golf Course is almost complete.  By June, it will be time to dust off your golf clubs and hit the links!  In the meantime, the driving range is the perfect place to practice your swing, take lessons, or just meet up with other golfers.

Fountain of Youth

One of the Park's WPA-era drinking fountains has been beautified and renovated thanks to a donation from the Hash House Harriers.  The fountain is located adjacent to the Anseman Avenue entrance off of City Park Avenue. Come see it and quench your thirst soon!

Gem of the Park

The Dunbar Pavilion, donated in 1904 by Esplanade Avenue resident Francis B. Dunbar, is an elegant gazebo that now resides in Storyland.  Recently restored to its former splendor, its ornate ironwork is graced with arabesque spandrels between slender footed columns.  This pavilion, party gazebos, and party houses can be reserved for your next occasion by calling (504)488-2896 or emailing cpsales@nocp.org.

City Bark says bow- Wow!

NOLA City Bark, a non-profit group, is raising $500,000 for the city's first dog park, to be located on a 4.6 acre spread near Popp Fountain. This state-of-the-art facility will be a wonderful gathering place for the city's dogs and their two-legged friends.  To help, visit nolacitybark.org.

Donations Needed

Katrina and the levee failures did $43 million in damages to City Park.  Our endowment is seriously low.  If you can help us rebuild the park or build the endowment, contact John Hopper at jhopper@nocp.org.
