
We are looking for a few good Scarecrows...
to showcase at the annual Fall Garden Show.
We invite you to create a one-of-a-kind scarecrow for the competition. Categories include Funniest, Scariest, Most Original and Best Traditional. Individuals, families, businesses, civic organizations and schools are all encouraged to participate. Those attending the Fall Garden Show can't wait to see what you come up with!
Information and Rules
- Scarecrows must be freestanding, supported by a prop or built around a frame. A six foot tall scarecrow frame (free of charge) is available at the Garden Gift Shop. You can pick it up Tuesday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Please include a sign no larger than 8 ½ x 11 indicating the name of the exhibitor and the name of the scarecrow.
- Scarecrows may be set up on Thursday October 15th or Friday October 16th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Scarecrows must remain on display through October 30th. Scarecrows must be removed by November 6th or they will be discarded.
- Judging will take place the morning of Saturday, October 17th at the Fall Garden Show. Ribbons will be awarded in each category.
- Scarecrows must be in good taste. Those that reflect controversial social or political situations will not be accepted.
- Scarecrows must be constructed to withstand weather conditions.
- No perishable goods (squash, pumpkins, etc.) may be used in the construction of your scarecrow.
- Stuffing can be anything, but newspaper and water soluble peanuts will not work. Plastic bags holds up best.
- Facial expression is the first thing a viewer will notice. The face can be sad, cheerful, beautiful, ugly or angry. It could be a famous person or a cartoon character.
- Hair can be made from a variety of materials including yarn, pipe cleaners, shredded plastic, foam bead, moss, rope, raffia, mop head or torn strips of fabric.
- Accessories make the difference! Add hats, gloves, shoes, scarf, etc.
- Some suggestions for the head are old milk jugs, flower pot, gourd, wood, basketball, plastic pumpkin, pillowcase or burlap.
